Please make a GPU GTX-1080 Ti build for me $3500 budget

== Overview:

I saw a post by Slav that the nvidia-gtx-1080i is the best (in terms of overall walltime in training). I want a similar setup, but want to get two nvidia-gtx-1080i gpus with the 40PCIe lanes and need everything else that just "works" with this setup. (Motherboard, cpu, coolers, case, etc).

Budget: 3500 USD (California, USA) (flexible by a $100-$200).

Purpose: Deep learning experiments and general desktop usage - not gaming.

== Peripherals:

  • GPU: 2 nvidia GTX 1080-ti (are there better gpus btw in terms of overall walltime for training? - need to train multiple models in parallel)
  • RAM: 32 GB (want to extend to 64GB later)
  • SSD: at least 480GB.
  • Network: Wired and Wireless
  • Drives: DVD R/W, USB
  • Sound card: For external speakers
  • CPU: (Intel Xeon?) - Something with 40PCIe lanes as described in the article to make sure I fully use the GPUs.
  • Cooler: Need a water cooler since it gets hot here.
  • Case, Case fan, Power supply: What are decent compatible pieces?
  • OS: planning to get latest Ubuntu (free)

  • Q1: What are the best parts/pieces to get the above goals under the budget?

  • Q2: How easy is it to mess up the installation? I've not done any installation before, so are there any "go-to" manuals for beginners to look at before starting this?

Thanks for your time!!

For the Ubuntu installation, use Virtual Box to test beforehand. First, install Virtual Box. Then, go to Ubuntu's website and install the latest ISO image(s). Next, move the ISO to a handy spot on your desktop. Enter the virtual machine, create an Ubuntu machine (64 bit most likely), and set up a virtual hard disk. Once all that is complete, configure the settings by adding a DVD drive, then "insert" the ISO image into the "DVD drive". Boot the system, and it should boot to the Ubuntu configuration menu. I've done this a bunch of times, and it works perfectly. Later, you'll need to unpack the ISO file and move each file onto a DVD and burn it. Don't leave them inside of an ISO file or a folder, as it will not boot.

Virtual Box: https://www.virtualbox.org/

Ubuntu: https://www.ubuntu.com/

I hope that helps.

  1. Is it possible to change the cooler to like a liquid cooler or something less clunky / more quiet? Do you have recommendations?

  2. Is it possible to change the cpu to something from Intel with the original requirements (I just feel more comfortable with Intel).

Thanks!
